Ghost
Cards
Ghost Card games
are a classroom favorite. I learned about this activity
in a Ralph William's workshop about 25 years ago. As you
read about this game, it may sound a little silly, but the
kids love it and they practice their math facts while having
fun.
The purpose of
the game is for students to read and answer the 2 math problems.
Then they guess which answer is hiding (the ghost number).
Uncover the hiding number to see who guessed correctly.
Students who picked the correct answer can give a "silent"
hurray!
This game can be
used in small groups with an adult or independently by students.
It goes like this:
Students read aloud
the two problems with the answers. (kind of a chant)
The teacher asks,
"Who thinks the ghost number is 8? (Students
raise their hands) Who thinks the ghost number is
7?" (Students raise their hands)
The teacher uncovers
the "ghost" number. Winners give the "silent"
hurray. The game doesn't have an overall winner. It's
just a fun way to get some quick practice.
Make a set of Ghost
Cards for each of your Tubs. Facts can include the
current number facts and a review of old facts. The
blue pocket you see above is made out stapled construction
paper.
You can refer to
the following chart to prepare your cards or refer to the
Number Family Study Booklet.
