This sign is in our parking lot at Brentwood School.

1.  Do you see a little word inside the word "bus?" 

2.  Did you know that ing was added to the word "park" to change it to parking?  Park is the root word (main word ) . 

3.  Listen to the vowel sound of the ar in park. It's the same sound that you hear in the word car. Sometimes you can figure out what a new word is if it looks like a word that you already know.

4.  What is the vowel sound of the y at the end of the word only?  The letter y at the end of a word usually has the long sound of e or i. Examples: baby, my 

 

Challenge: 

1.  Write a list of words with the same vowel sound that you hear in the word "park." 

2.  Write a list of words where the "y" at the end is making the long vowel sound of e. (baby) 

3.  Write a list of words where the "y" at the end is making the long vowel sound of i. (my)
