1.Two letter words that start with a consonant often have a long vowel sound. The vowel says its name.  Examples: no, go, ho-ho, so, be, me we... 

Here are some rule breakers: to, do 

2. Do you know why the i in time is long?  That's right---it ends with an e.  Bossy e runs over to tell the first vowel to say its name.  He's too tired to say anything when he gets back to his place.  So---he is silent.

 

 

Challenge: 

1.Make a list of words with the long i sound.  Sort them by their spelling patterns.  There are lot of ways to make the long i sound!!!! 

2.  How many words can you write that rhyme with park? 

3.  How many words can you write to rhyme with time?
